"Press Enter . . . "

Good morning,

I hope like many of you, I had the great delight of watching "Julie & Julia" this weekend. And I wonder how many of my fellow bloggers had chills of recognition watching Julie publish her first blog post. In the middle of a dark night. Lit only by a bright task lamp. "Press enter to publish." Wondering if it would have any impact. Or any readers. "Press enter to publish." The music swells. "Press enter." In the darkened theater, I think I may have even cried a bit - lol.

I remember the night that I published the first entry on my blog. I had been to a seminar on adapting your design business in the current economy and one of the speaker's first questions was, "How many of you have a blog?" I think two hands went up. And neither of them were mine - I only knew 'blogging' from reading "The Sartorialist" everyday. But, I did some research - it was shocking to see how vibrant the design blogging community was. So I registered with blogspot. And wrote a post. And 'saved' it. And re-wrote it the next day. And 'saved' it again - my hand sliding over the 'enter' button, but too unsure to press it. "Press enter to publish."

Well, clearly, I eventually pressed enter. (If only out of frustration that I was being so damn wimpy.) And that one "enter" has been evolving into "The Adventures of Tartanscot" that is now such an important part of my life and my business. And it has affected me in ways I could have never imagined at the time. I usually write and publish most of my posts fairly quickly. I see something, I write about it, I publish it. And it's a system that works for me. But as my blog boasts - these are the things that inspire me - lol. Well, sometimes it's tough to be constantly inspired whilst surviving a crowded city and running a busy design studio. So - I know I need to keep my eyes wide open constantly. I like it. So many times - 'being inspired' involves 'being aware.'

And, of course, I remember the first time that someone that I didn't know left a comment. There was a significant amount of giggling. And now I have new friends circling the globe. And new ones almost everyday.

So this brief missive functions to document my evolution to this point - but, more importantly, to say 'hi' to you fine folks out there. Those that I see in my day to day life. Those of you who leave comments that I've never met. Those of you who read. Those of you who enjoy. Those of you in 'the business.' Those of you who find inspiration. Those of you who inspire me.

my humble thanks and gratitude,
tartanscot

I so agree; while others don't understand what the big fuss of blogging is about, I too never realized what an impact it would make on my life. What amazing, kind, & thoughtful people I was about to meet & how incredibly supportive they are.

If must be rewarding for you to know you continually inspire so many of us non-professional out there?!
It is an amazing community out there, isn't it? Funny, I now feel as though I have people I could meet for tea in all corners of the world!

And I am happy you pressed enter!!
I admit it I cried too - My mom is a chef and she did the cordon blue and the blogging experience mixed together was a bomb to this sensible little cute mexican boy.

I, too, wrote and re-wrote my first post for about a week. The day I posted it I had my first migraine headache. Sticking with the Ephron theme - I can be very high-maintenance.

So glad you hit publish. The first time and again and again.
y'all are ALL so amazingly sweet. I glad to count you among my readers - and thrilled to count you all amongst my friends.
Tartanscot,
You are a the best! I read your blog and am inspired. I also do a fair bit of laughing--and on occasion, tear up! Thank you for brightening up our days. You've crossed the line of online buddy to real friend!

It's so easy to agonize over posting to a blog. It's kind of how I got my own started... after a blogging failure a friend told me that I needed to stop trying to make it perfect and just *write*. That it is more about ideas and inspiration and the practice of writing, and that is where the perfection lies!

I've only been reading your blog for a few weeks, but I can definitely say that I am glad that you hit that 'ENTER' button! :)
I am glad we have made it worth it as readers - when they fail you, it can be so much harder to hit Enter...

I remember my first post too. I was deathly ill. I hadn't gotten out of bed for two days. I was miserable and BORED. I don't know what sparked the idea, but I started a blog and joined twitter all in the same breath. I felt terrified and energized all in the same step. Now I can't imagine life without either. I have met so many wonderful HELPFUL people via the web and enjoy the relationships I have gained.

I found your blog a while back because I googled "plaid"! I am MAD about plaid, tartan, whatever you want to call it - I adore it! But I found so much more in your blog, it is warm and heartfelt and full of beautiful pictures and ideas. And I swooned seeing your brown plaid header today! Thank you for all of your efforts - it is much appreciated.
Karen,

So glad that you found me - and through such a perfect method . . lol.

I saw this movie while at the beach this past week on a rainy day. i have to agree - LOVED the Julia parts while the Julie was lacking EXCEPT for the blogging references! When she was jumping up and down over her comments I nearly cried! lol
