How much do you love this "Sleeping Porch" project by Phoebe Howard ! I can only imagine the restful weekend that I'd have in such a stylish retreat.

" ahhhhh . . . "

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend planned. Mine is somewhat jam-packed with great friends, opera rehearsals, trail runs, and a well-needed break from the office.

Also, hop over to "What is James Wearing?" and help James celebrate the 1st anniversary of his wonderful blog.

"The New Antiquarians . . . "

Sean Crowley and Meredith Modzelewski
Greetings,

While flipping (or whatever the laptop equivalent is . . . lol) through the New York Times this morning, I ran across this marvelous article that sent my pulse racing.  Since I share that love of all things "club insignia, taxidermy, and  ancestral portrait," I find these whimsical spaces so intriguing.

The link between Mr. Crowley's objects and his impulse to acquire them them isn't nostalgia, he said.  "It's the draw of authenticity."

 just absolutely wonderful.
and you just know that there's a great story
behind each and every item . . . lol.

"Once upon a time . . . "

Good morning all,

28 years ago today. It was still dark outside. I had placed my alarm clock across the room so that there would be no way I could sleep through it. Stumbling out into the living room. Calling friends who I knew were also sitting blurry-eyed sipping coffee (actually, I think it was diet coke - I was only in high school.) Excited. Waiting. Watching. Giddy.

But, nothing could have prepared me for this. I still well-up with emotion whenever I see images of Diana stepping out of the covered carriage. And hearing the roar from the crowd . . . a roar that seemed the grow louder still as 'the dress' began to erupt onto the steps of St. Paul's. It was all so beautiful. The pageantry. The flowers. and oh my, the music. It all seemed so full of hope.

And it was the first time I heard the music of William Mathias - in an anthem written especially for the service -

Were you awake and watching? What are your memories?

like the corners of my mind,

"Pale and Dramatic . . . "

Greetings all,

Just over the Golden Gate Bridge . . . hang a right . . . then take a left . . . and in about 90 minutes you can be in the wonderful Napa Valley region. And in the middle of the valley is the adorable town of St. Helena. And in the middle of St. Helena is the very clever, and wonderfully talented Erin Martin Design firm.

such a simple colour story. such amazing textures.

love, love, love the light fixtures in the master bath.

still loving the simplicity and the warm dark floors.

and who wouldn't have the sweetest of dreams in this cozy little nook.

"A Weekend in Bed . . . "

Greetings,

Sometimes I find the best thing to do after a long week in the office . . . is curl up in my huge comfy bed and spend the weekend catching up on reading and movies. I have a strong feeling that the next few days will be a combination of a re-read of "Brideshead Revisited," the new movie from "Doctor Who," some strong tea, and Thai food from the place around the corner. Ahhhhh . . . . .

the wonderful work of marvelously talented Ken Fulk.

the calm colours and crisp linen of designer, Ginger Barber.

or maybe something more rural-inspired from Mimi Maddock McMaken.

some drama and romance from Jeffrey BilHuber.

or the beautiful colours and bold patterns from Cathy Kincaid.

Do you have a favourite place to spend the weekend? a favourite book? a favourite movie? Share any ideas you have . . .

Best wishes for a great weekend!

"Keeping Calm . . ."

Salutations and greetings,

For some reason, it seems as though almost every being I've come into contact with today has been in the WORST mood . . . lol. It's tough trying to remain calm and keep positive in the face of such sad, overwhelming odds. So in an attempt to re-boot, I've had a proper dig through my 'these pictures always make me happy' file.

For those of who who need the inspiration - help yourself to some of mine.

"Out in the Yard . . . "

Greetings all,

Whew, it's been a crazy, busy week . . . but, it is so important to recognize that we all need some good pampering every now and again - finding those special treats and treasures to make your day to day life better is of the utmost importance. Wonderful imported teas to start the day. Hand-crafted shoes to meet the pavement. Beautiful pajamas to end the day. and, yay, great potions to stock that tiny shelf in the shower . . .

and for that, one of my all time favourites : Neal's Yard Remedies.

For all of your pampering needs. Skin care. Hair care. Wonderful body scrubs.

Face scrubs. Essential oils. Shower gels. Hand care.

Stop by and have a look around . . . and tell them tartanscot sent you . . . lol. And have a great weekend.

"Picture it . . . "

Greetings,

France. Summer, 2001. It was a languid, lazy day. We (my chamber choir) had been on tour through rural France for almost two weeks - concerts in Albi, Gramat, Gourdon, Toulouse, St. Felix, and numerous others . . . and I was done. Totally done.

We had spent the afternoon touring through Carcassonne, on a rare day when we didn't have a concert to sing, but my mind kept wandering back to my cosy little haven here in San Francisco. As far as I was concerned, we could have driven directly to the Paris Airport. I love my choir. I loved the tour. I loved the concerts. But, I wanted to go home - and be alone . . . lol.

Not long after dinner, we ducked out of the city . . . and headed out the surrounding countryside . . . and waited.

and then . . . .

and then . . . .

It was overwhelming. It was spectacular. It was one of those moments that you can't prepare for. Listening to the entire countryside erupt with cries of joy with each new colour and explosion. I love those kind of surprises.

Happy Bastille Day,
Scot

"Fight. Love. Live"

Oh, sweet and happy weekend, how I have longed for thy company . . . come, walk with me in the garden . . .

These images are from the extraordinary estates of Filoli located just south of San Francisco. The home's interiors may be familiar, as they have been used as the settings for enumerable films, from "Rent" to the opening credits of "Dynasty."

But, its beautiful grounds and gardens seem to be only recognizable to our local residents. One of my dearest friends, Lisa, has served as my own private tour guide on many occasions.

"The Sunken Garden and the Garden House"

"I think one of the things I like the most about visiting Filoli is the structure of the gardens. Each 'room' is so full of character, from the flowers and trees to the hardscape statues and fountains. So each visit I can delight in the colors of the season within the constance of the overall structure. From each part of the garden, I am tempted to keep exploring by the glimpses into the next 'room.' " . . . Lisa Haley

"The Knot Garden"

Fiery blossoms and deep shadow in perfect harmony.

If you are in the bay area, the perfect antidote to our gloomy weather is a marvelous day wondering aimlessly about the grounds of Filoli Estate. The property so named from the credo of its builder, William Bourn - “Fight for a just cause; Love your fellow man; Live a good life.”

'Fi'ght, 'Lo've, 'Li've - "Filoli" - wise advice.

happy weekend,
tartanscot

"In this Troubled Economy . . . '

Greetings all,

Of all things that inspire my blog posts, my hope is that this will be one of the *few* based on a facebook status . . . lol.

Yesterday was a tough day at the office and I made a silly facebook posting that "one of my more troublesome clients might need a spanking . . . lol." (and let me put some parameters on 'troublesome' - paraphrased, sort of - "can you please place the order for the new fabric today, tell the workroom to rush the project, and I'll send you the payment when I have a moment." um, no.) My 'status' brought out a flurry of responses from fellow designers and friends alike with everything from - "after you finish, could you spank one of my clients" to "in this economy, you need every client you can find."

It was that last statement that has had me thinking for most of today. In this economy (or in any economy), should you cater to every person who wants your services?

Discuss . . .

"How Does Your . . . "

" . . . Urban Garden Grow ?"

Nestled quietly on a side street in the Bayview area, who could have guessed it - Flora Grubb Gardens - an amazing nursery just waiting to be discovered. I had the good fortune of being brought here by a friend this evening after a tough day at the office, and it was the perfect antidote.

An amazing collection of vibrant plantings, great containers, charming home accessories, and everything for the 'city garden' - all in a cool, hipster-vibe space. Great staff and great prices.

You can also stop by for a delicious cup of coffee at the Ritual Coffee Bar - a quick 'pick-me-up' - extra yummy.
